Lee Cemetery Flagpole Project
A neglected cemetery often suffers from overgrown grounds, weathered headstones, and a lack of visible care, which can unintentionally convey that the lives and sacrifices of those buried there have been forgotten. Installing a flagpole serves as a powerful symbol of respect, remembrance, and unity—especially for veterans and community members interred on the grounds. A prominently displayed flag can restore dignity to the site, encourage community engagement, and inspire ongoing maintenance efforts. Beyond its symbolic value, a flagpole can become a focal point for memorial ceremonies, fostering a renewed sense of honor and connection to local history.
The Funding
The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) is a volunteer, non-profit, charitable, fraternal, patriotic and educational organization. The SUVCW is officially recognized as the Grand Army of the Republic's (GAR) legal successor, receiving its Congressional Charter in 1954 (Public Law 605). A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, they hope to receive funding from the citizens of the serving communities.

The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War is dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of the heroes who fought and worked to save the Union in the American Civil War. In many instances, we carry on the work that the men of the Grand Army of the Republic began. Below are some key, perpetual projects in which the Garfield Camp 62 regularly takes an active role here in Vermont.
